The Gospel of Judas seems to confirm what some scholars have hinted at for years, that the Judas Iscariot story was invented by the early church to provide a scapegoat for Jesus' untimely death. The long-expected Messiah was not supposed to die without first liberating Israel from the iron yoke of Rome. So why did Jesus die? To blame the Romans would be suicidal; to blame the Jews would be to implicate too many peers. By the time the gospels were written Judas was already dead; besides he also had a bad reputation as a terrorist. So why not blame Judas? And wasn't Judas the brother of Jesus, or was that another Judas?
